A CEILIDH OR A COUNTRY DANCE?
What's the difference?
A BACKGROUND TO DANCE TRADITIONS.
We are often asked to play for a Ceilidh, which we will do with pleasure, but we think our music and dance has traditional influences from the all over the British Isles.
The tradition of the Ceilidh is especially strong in Scotish and Irish Culture, but a near parallel is an English Traditional Country Dance. The two names as used today can mean very much the same kind of event, with the dances and music of the Celtic and English regions mixing well for an evening of dancing and relaxation.
The music we use for dances tends to vary in style and origin. Some tunes are associated with a particular region, but Shepherds Hey likes to play music originating in our local Yorkshire tradition.
WHY DANCE?
Why Not! Before the days of modern entertainment, socialising at a dance was the way of letting off steam and unwinding. It is still a marvellous way of enjoying yourself and meeting people. Recommended for any event, whether or not those attending are young or old, already good friends or just meeting each other for the first time, a Country Dance or a Ceilidh is a guaranteed icebreaker! Some of our best events so far have been for schools, and children in particular, always enjoy our dances.
